I had the pleasure of viewing Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary, “FLOW”, yesterday afternoon from the comfort of my queen-sized futon mattress (yes, it actually is quite comfy).

For myself, this film was quite the eye-opener. ”FLOW” chronicles the varied issues that together comprise the World Water Crisis, from water privatization in Bolivia to the damming of the Ganges River, and addresses the question “Can anyone own water?” I don’t want to give away too much information so I will simply say this: watch this movie and if you don’t already, you will think twice before you purchase bottled water.

At the end of the documentary, a call to action is presented to the viewer: sign “FLOW”‘s online petition to add an Article 31 to the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights reading:

“Everyone has the right to clean and accessible water, adequate for the health and well-being of the individual and family, and no one shall be deprived of such access or quality of water due to individual economic circumstance.”

Since the release of “FLOW”, the United Nations has declared access to clean water a human right and urged wealthier countries to provide assistance to countries unable to provide sanitary water to its people. But Article 31 is not yet written into the Declaration – click here to sign the petition!

Hey everyone – we are one day away from San Diego’s annual Earth Fair celebration so we will be running around town all day, making last-minute preparations for the big event! I’m so excited, I think the only way to explain my emotions is to share this clip from one of my all-time favorite television programs, Summer Heights High…

For those of you who can’t make it to Earth Fair, there are still plenty of ways to give yourself excitement quivers this Earth Day; just take a look at the numerous Earth Day events across the nation here to get the full effect…

If your local community doesn’t provide an Earth Day event, its not too late to start an Earth Day celebration of your own! Your event can be anything you want it to be, from a backyard cookout to a city-wide parade – its all up to you.

(Susan Boyle approves this message.)

If you need a bit of inspiration for organizing an Earth Day event, here are some suggestions from the Earth Day Network!

1. Organize an Earth Day hike, walk, run, swim or bike outing.
2. Put together a light bulb drive in your community. Collect old incandes- cent light bulbs and give away (or sell at a discount) energy-efficient com- pact fluorescent bulbs.
3. Call your local Parks Department and offer to plan a park clean-up, inva- sive plant removal or tree planting.
4. Bring local green businesses and environmental organizations together to create an eco-fair to inform the public about ways they can build a greener future. Schedule it to coincide with a farmers market and further engage a captive audience.
5. Invite a professor or a local expert to educate your group or community about the threat of climate change and ways to combat it.
6. Take an Earth Day Network petition template and make it your own. Use it to demand comprehensive climate and clean energy legislation. Collect signatures in a central location and deliver the petition to your elected offi- cials after Earth Day.
7. Call a school or community center and offer to build and plant a vegeta- ble garden for them and help maintain it during the year. Coordinate with local companies to request supply and service donations.
8. Organize a meeting with local government officials to learn about how they take environmental issues into consideration when managing the re- gion. Contact Earth Day Network and make your event part of the Global Day of Conversation, an initiative that engages leaders around the world in conversations within their local communities on issues of climate, energy and sustainability.
9. Organize a screening of an environmentally-themed documentary such as King Corn, Blue Vinyl, Who Killed the Electric Car, Earth Days, Blue Planet or The 11th Hour.
10. Organize an e-waste recycling drive. Collect old computers, televisions, and other electronic equipment from you community and find somewhere to recycle it.

Take care and we hope to see you tomorrow in Balboa Park!

In my quest to become a more Earth-conscious consumer and citizen, I have found that the simple, small efforts to be “green” are the ones that bring me the most pleasure and satisfaction. Yesterday as I browsed a local gift shop’s varied collection of stationary, looking for the perfect thank-you cards, I discovered these lovely little things…

…from this lovely little company…

Made from cotton, these notecards, as well as all Waste Not Paper products, are manufactured soley in the US using renewable energy resources such as wind and hydro power. WNP uses alternative packing materials to cut back on waste and works with paper mills that practice certified sustainable forestry.

Because of their organic simplicity and Waste Not Paper’s honest commitment to a “green” lifestyle, these adorable notecards put a smile on my face and make writing thank you notes an absolute pleasure. I think that’s essentially what we are trying to do here at Pour It Forward – promote conservation and charity through an understated, attractive product. Just as these cards symbolize a modern solution to global deforestation, our BUXX provide an every-day reminder of ongoing drought and water conflicts around the world and the good that people are doing to remedy these issues.

To some, these cards may just be overpriced paper and our BUXX, just another watering can. But to me, they are sweet little eco-friendly delights that serve both global and domestic purposes.

Yup, its that time of year again. Earth Day is just around the corner and we at Pour It Forward are anxiously prepping for Earth Fair 2011 – the world’s largest free environmental fair, right here in Balboa Park! Last year, PIF made its Earth Fair debut and we had so much fun, we of course had to participate again.

Though the official Earth Day is the 22nd of April, Earth Fair will take place on Sunday the 17th. If you’re in town, be sure to stop by and check out our BUXX! We will be near the Plaza de Panama fountain.

Look for us near this edifice. Source:Tranquilbedlam, Flickr

Look for more Earth Day posts throughout the week to stay in the know of other Earthy Events around the globe!

Oh! And we can’t forget the actual countdown: 8 days until Earth Fair, 13 days until Earth Day…

Yesterday, California Governor Jerry Brown announced that the 2009 emergency drought proclamation issued by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was to be lifted, after a very fortunate winter granted the Golden State a mountain snowpack 165% of normal.

While this is absolutely fantastic news, we must not interpret this announcement as a green light to go ahead and revert to previous, perhaps unwise water consumption – and Governor Brown agrees! Though we had a wonderfully wet winter, Governor Brown estimates that only 70% of the water supply requested by the State Water Project will be able to be delivered and many areas, such as the Coachella Valley, will forever be in need of individual conservation of water.

So let us remain mindful citizens not just of California but of our precious Earth, and try, every day, to Pour It Forward!
